Privacy Policy
This policy describes what Chinese Tips (中文通) actually collects, which is very little. It is written PDPA-first for Singapore and is suitable for a mixed-age audience.
Playing the game
- Your progress — stars, XP, mastered words, settings — is stored in your browser's local storage on your own device. It is not sent to us unless you sign in (below).
- In the Android and iPhone apps, Google AdMob shows a full-screen ad after a round, at most three a day, and none to a learner who has paid. Every ad request is marked as directed to children and limited to ads rated for general audiences, which Google serves without personalisation. AdMob receives the technical data an ad request needs, such as the device model, operating system and IP address, under Google’s own privacy policy. Where the law requires consent first, the app asks for it before any ad.
- This website displays non-personalized advertisements served by Google AdSense, tagged for child-directed / age-restricted treatment (tfat=1) so that no interest-based advertising or remarketing cookies are used. The free web pages display ads; the paid full version has none. Third-party vendors, including Google, use cookies or web beacons to serve ads and measure ad performance on this website. Google’s use of advertising cookies lets it and its partners serve ads to visitors. Google’s Ads Settings turn off personalised ads from Google, and aboutads.info covers other vendors. How Google uses information from sites that use its services: policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites.
- Page visits are counted with Cloudflare Web Analytics: which page was opened, the page that linked to it, how fast it loaded, and the browser, operating system, device type and country. It stores nothing on your device — no cookies — and Cloudflare discards your IP address rather than keeping it.
- The app counts steps through it, to see where learners stop and fix it: opening the app, finishing onboarding, opening a lesson's scene, finishing a stage or a lesson (with its stars), seeing the purchase sheet, starting a checkout, signing in and buying. Each count carries the app version, whether this device had used the app before, the device type, the helper language, the level, the country, and a random number for that visit that is forgotten when the tab closes. Nothing that identifies you, and nothing stored on your device but that visit number. They are kept in our own Cloudflare account and shared with no one.
- Active users are counted with an anonymous, scrambled identifier: once a day the app says it was used and whether the full version is unlocked, and the first time, where the visit came from (a search engine, a link, or typed in) and the page it began on. We keep the scrambled identifier, never the original, with the day, the country and the device type. Your device keeps where you first came from and the day of its last count. Nothing personal is stored.
- Visitors to these pages and the app are counted by device: your browser keeps a random number (no cookie), and once a day each page or the app says it was opened. We keep a scrambled form of that number with the day, never the number itself, so we can tell how many people read the pages, used the app, or both.
- If the app crashes, it sends us a short report so the fault can be fixed: the error message, where in the code it happened, the page address, your browser version and the country your request came from. It contains none of your progress and nothing that identifies you.
- Listening features use your browser's built-in text-to-speech. Audio is generated on your device.
- The app loads fonts and character stroke data from content delivery networks (Google Fonts, jsDelivr). Those requests carry the standard technical data any web request does, such as your IP address, handled under those providers' policies.
If you sign in
- You can sign in with Google or with a link sent to your email address. Playing needs no sign-in; buying on the web or in the Android app does. When you sign in, your progress — lessons, stars, words, characters practised, papers sat — is stored under your account on Google's Firebase servers so it follows you to your other devices, and it is merged with what each device already holds. Your handwriting strokes, settings and preferences stay on the device.
- Firebase Authentication keeps the email address you signed in with and, for a Google account, its name. We use them to recognise you and, if you buy on the web, pass the email address to the payment provider so the payment page opens with it filled in. When you buy, we send one email to that address saying the full version is unlocked. We do not share them otherwise.
- Deleting your account (see the delete-account page) removes the stored progress with it.
If you buy the full version
- In the iPhone app nothing needs signing in: you buy with your Apple Account through the App Store, and the app sends Apple's signed record of the purchase to chinese.tips to check it. We keep Apple's transaction identifiers, the product, the price and currency, the App Store country, the date, and the date of any refund. Apple does not give us your name, email address or card.
- On the web and in the Android app, buying requires signing in, so your unlock can follow you across devices. The purchase record holds a generated identifier, the date it was paid for and the payment provider's references for it (for a subscription bought before, its plan and renewal date); the email address is held by Firebase Authentication, as above.
- On the web, the purchase sheet asks chinese.tips which country your connection comes from, so that buyers in the EU, the EEA and the UK see the box about the right to cancel. The purchase record keeps that country and, if you ticked the box, when, and we email you a confirmation of it.
- Card details are entered on the payment provider's hosted page (Airwallex), in Google Play or in the App Store. We do not receive or store card numbers.
Children
Playing needs no account and no personal details, so a child can play without providing any. Ads in the Android and iPhone apps and on the website are requested as directed to children (above). The full version is intended to be bought by an adult.
Your choices
Clearing your browser's site data erases everything stored on the device. To delete your account, see Deleting Your Account. For any other question about data, write to support@latticelogic.app.
How long we keep your information
- Your account (sign-in, progress, what you own): while you use it. If an account is not used for 24 months and holds no purchase, we delete it. An account with a purchase is kept so that what you bought stays yours. You can ask us to delete any account sooner (Deleting Your Account), and we delete it within 30 days.
- Purchases and refunds: for as long as tax law requires us to keep sales records (at least 5 years). These hold the purchase, not your progress.
- Sign-in links sent by email: Google Firebase sends them, and we keep no copy.
- Usage statistics (which days the app was opened, and how a visitor first arrived): stored under a scrambled id that is not your account id, and deleted after 13 months.
- Crash reports, step counts and request counts: 3 months.
- Server logs: 30 days.
- Backups: 7 days, then overwritten.
- Emails we send you (the email when you buy, the confirmation of the box about the right to cancel): copies stay in our mailbox as our record of what we sent, for support and tax.
If you are under 13 and a parent asks us to, we delete the child’s information at once.
